Sami Zayn’s celebration as the new WWE Undisputed Champion on the July 3 episode of WWE SmackDown didn’t last long, and fans immediately shared their opinions online. After Cody Rhodes earned the title shot once again by defeating Jey Uso to become the new No. 1 contender, many fans felt like it was being unfair to the newly crowned champion.
Zayn came out to a huge ovation with the WWE Championship. Speaking to the crowd, he looked back on the long journey that finally led him to the top.
Zayn admitted that many of the same fans cheering him now had booed him not long ago. Still, he said he never changed who he was. Instead of giving up his values, he stayed true to himself and became WWE Champion as “the last real good guy.”
But his celebration didn’t last long. Cody Rhodes came out to congratulate the new champion. But Sami Zayn wasn’t buying it. He accused Rhodes of really wanting the championship back instead of simply congratulating him.
Things became even more tense when Jey Uso joined them. Jey congratulated Zayn but also said he wanted to bring the championship back to The Bloodline.
Zayn, out of frustration, told both to stay away from his title.
The segment took another turn when acting Adam Pearce announced that Zayn would defend the WWE Championship on the next episode of RAW instead of waiting until SummerSlam. He also revealed that Rhodes and Jey Uso would face each other later that night to decide the No. 1 contender.
The main event delivered a competitive match. In the end, Rhodes pinned Uso and earned another shot at the WWE title.
Fans want WWE to give Sami Zayn a meaningful championship reign
While Rhodes’ win set up a major title match for RAW, many fans weren’t happy with the direction.
A lot of people said WWE should let Zayn enjoy his first championship reign instead of putting the title back on Rhodes so soon. One fan expressed his frustration by referring to the possibility of Rhodes winning his fourth WWE Championship.
Another prayed for Zayn’s win over Rhodes.
Some fans were simply tired of seeing Rhodes back in the title picture.
Another frustrated fan commented that he won’t be watching SmackDown again if Rhodes wins.
Others felt Rhodes should take a break from the championship scene.
The reaction shows just how much fans have connected with Zayn’s underdog story. After finally winning his first world title on his tenth attempt by defeating Cody Rhodes and Gunther at Night of Champions, many believe he deserves more than a short championship run.
