Chelsea’s move for Pep Chavarria is surprising, but makes a lot of sense when explained by Simon Phillips.

When news first broke about Chelsea interest in Pep Chavarria, we didn’t know what to make of it.

The deal is so different to the sort we’ve got used to in the last few years that it was hard to believe it was real. But bigger and bigger sources have confirmed it, and now it really looks like it’s happening. Our writer Simon Phillips took a look at how it’s all come together on his Substack.

Phillips’ sources told him that Chelsea knew Marc Cucurella was likely to leave, and so first sounded out Lewis Hall as a potential replacement. They also took a look at Maxi Araujo of Sporting.

“But the more they discussed the left back area the more they started to sway towards signing a much cheaper option so they could use the transfer budget in other areas on the pitch that they see as more of a priority, such as centre backs and the midfield/attack.”

Xabi Alonso had been watching Chavarria, and put his name forward as the bargain option. Chelsea are clearly happy to go along with it.

    In other news…

Crystal Palace are going to ask for huge money for Maxence Lacroix- and it’s all thanks to a Tottenham deal earlier this summer.

Xabi Alonso has a lot of responsibility, and could even force Chelsea to change the goalkeeper policy which has not been at all successful.
