“Distorted truth” – Chelsea statement about Maresca contested

Enzo Maresca is the new Manchester City boss, but the recriminations at Chelsea look set to continue for a while.

Enzo Maresca was appointed as Manchester City manager yesterday, with his new club agreeing a €20m compensation payment to Chelsea, who also got an apology out of the coach who walked away from Stamford Bridge in January.

That apology – along with a statement from the Blues on their website – makes their side of the story very clear. Maresca told them in the Autumn that he was thinking about taking over from Pep Guardiola. He then made his position untenable, and resigned in December.

According to transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio, however, that’s not the whole story:

“[Chelsea] have imposed… a version of the story that you will all have clearly understood did not happen that way,” Di Marzio said in quotes translated by SportWitness.

“Chelsea have insisted on a reconstruction of the story, making it seem that Maresca caused damage to the club. That he was only thinking about Manchester City, that by resigning he created problems for the club, and all these various reconstructions which, I repeat, tell a distorted truth.”

Of course, nobody should be surprised that a statement on the Chelsea website designed to make those in charge look good and to blame a bad season on Maresca doesn’t tell the whole story.

    In other news…

Chelsea could yet sell Andrey Santos, despite the fact that the Brazilian has only had one (quite impressive) season in the first team.

Liam Rosenior’s nightmare spell at Chelsea hasn’t stopped him getting a new job back in Ligue 1 – he’s already lined up for one.
