Gary Neville has urged INEOS to sell Mason Mount this summer, as Manchester United attempt to rebuild their midfield in the coming months.

Neville urges Man Utd to sell Mount

It was another excellent outing for Michael Carrick‘s Man United side on Sunday, as they secured the double over Liverpool for the first time in a decade.

Victory over their rivals also secured Champions League qualification one year after a disastrous bottom half finished threatened to spill over into this season.

It’s job complete for Carrick, who now has the remaining three games to convince Old Trafford chiefs that he is the man for the permanent job.

It’s not just the managerial role that has received the spotlight in recent days, however. With Champions League football secured, the focus has also turned towards the Red Devils’ transfer window, and one player could be heading for the exit door as a result.

In a ruthless mood despite the win against Liverpool, Neville urged Man United to sell Mount this summer, cashing in on their once-£60m signing to prioritise other additions.

He told Sky Sports: “Look, if you could then maybe trade Mason Mount for someone else who maybe can play in and out and can be a bit more flexible across the midfield and forward line then I would say go for a fifth [signing].”

It’s not something that Mount will want to hear just three years after arriving at Old Trafford, but it’s hard to argue with Neville. The Englishman is on the fringes of the best side at Old Trafford and now is the time for INEOS to be ruthless with sales – especially if they are to sign four priority targets.

Neville outlines Man Utd transfer “priority”

The Man Utd legend also had his say on where the club should focus their funds, claiming that their “priority” should be on signing four new players including a centre-back, a left-back and two midfielders.

He said: “You’re asking a lot of the players. I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and he may struggle.

Manchester United sealed a dramatic 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday.

“They need a centre-back, 100%, and they need two midfield players. They are the four priorities right now. They’re the players I would look at adding to this squad.”

To that end, it very much looks as though improving the midfield will be top of the to-do list. With Casemiro leaving and Manuel Ugarte potentially following, INEOS have already reportedly set their sights in Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali – two major upgrades.

Whether Man United push on and also welcome a left-back and a centre-back remains to be seen, but Neville certainly believes that should be the priority.
