Looking to skyrocket their way back to the top of the Premier Division standings this weekend, St. Patrick’s will welcome Waterford to Richmond Park on Friday night.
Starting with the hosts, while St. Patrick’s might have been forced to settle for consecutive stalemates against Sligo Rovers and Galway since opening up May, Stephen Kenny’s side have underlined their status as Ireland’s ultimate surprise package this season. Getting Friday’s return to Richmond Park underway sat in silver medal position, the Athletic are also just three points adrift of leapfrogging defending Premier Division champions Shamrock Rovers. Signing off April with back-to-back 3-1 victories against Drogheda and Bohemians, Kenny’s side have certainly been handed a golden opportunity this weekend. Pencilled in as a landslide contender here, St. Patrick’s will also be excited to make a return to home soil. Including a thumping 4-1 win against Sligo on April 3rd, it should be noted that the Reds have suffered just a sole domestic defeat in front of their own supporters since way back in January 2025.
As for the visitors, while Waterford might have eventually dragged themselves to a thrilling 3-3 stalemate at home against Dundalk last time out, it is no secret that Graham Coughland’s side are regarded as the standout relegation candidate this season. Despite clinging to their Premier Division status last season, Friday’s guests sit rock-bottom of the table and are remarkably already 10 points adrift of safety. In fact, the Blues have failed to win any of their 14 top-flight appearances since opening up the 2026 campaign and they have managed to put just six points on the board. Heading into March’s international break with a routine 2-0 loss at the hands of St. Patrick’s, Waterford have rightfully gained a reputation for their glaring issues at the back. Including a woeful 5-0 drumming against Dundalk back on March 13th, Goughlan’s struggling squad have already shipped 28 Premier Division strikes.
