The Olympics delivered a first full day of action at Paris 2024 on Saturday after a memorable opening ceremony.
Team GB earned its first medal of the Games after Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen claimed diving bronze in dramatic circumstances, winning Britain’s first medal in women’s diving in 64 years.
That was followed by a superb road cycling silver from Anna Henderson in the women’s individual time trial amid treacherous rain in Paris but there was heartbreak for Josh Tarling – who just missed out in the men’s TT after finishing in fourth place due to a puncture.
The swimming took centre stage this evening with Team GB’s focus on Adam Peaty as he cruised through his semi-final in his bid to win three consecutive 100m breaststroke Olympic gold medals. But the most eagerly-anticipated race of the day, and perhaps the meet, saw Katie Ledecky, Ariarne Titmus and Summer McIntosh against each other in the women’s 400m freestyle. It was Australia’s Titmus who defended her title ahead of McIntosh, with Ledecky trailing in third.
And hosts France completed a dream men’s rugby sevens triumph as Antoine Dupont inspired the hosts to dethrone two-time defending Olympic champions Fiji in a thrilling final at the Stade de France.

Anna Henderson gives ‘blood and tears’ to triumph in brutal Olympics time trial
Anna Henderson powered to a stunning silver in a Parisian deluge just two months after she feared her Olympic dreams might be over.
The 25-year-old broke her collarbone for the second time this year in May but battled back to full fitness in time to take on the women’s time trial.
Several riders suffered falls as rain swept across the French capital, but former skier Henderson was able to stay on-piste and crossed Pont Alexandre III in 41:09.83, fast enough to edge out Chloe Dygert – who was among those to come off her bike – for silver by less than a second.

Canada hit by Olympic points penalty for drone spying scandal – as head coach banned for one year
Olympic women’s football champions Canada have been docked six points, with head coach Bev Priestman suspended for a year, after the team admitted to using a drone to spy on their opponents.
The Canadian Olympic Committee said they were informed of the incident and took the decision to send Priestman home on Friday, as well as Canadian officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander, who have also been banned for a year.
Fifa, who fast-tracked their investigation, found Priestman and her two assistants “were each found responsible for offensive behavior and violation of the principles of fair play.”

Team GB diving hero reveals stunning recovery from back injury to win Olympics medal
Nothing plays with the emotions quite like sport. And few athletes have ridden a rollercoaster quite like Scarlett Mew Jensen after she kick-started the Team GB medal train in Paris.
Minutes after winning an unexpected bronze, alongside diving teammate Yasmin Harper in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard final, she revealed a partial back facture just three months ago almost prevented her from competing at all.
The 22-year-old feared her Games were over before she’d even packed a bag but after six weeks of rest she was back twisting and contorting her body to a bronze that marks Team GB’s first opening-day success in 20 years.
The pair shed tears when the scoreboard confirmed their place on the podium, and no wonder. Australia’s Maddison Keeney and Anabelle Smith had looked set to beat them until a howler of a last dive cleared the path for a British podium – and the sweetest of moments for Mew Jensen.

Brazilian dressage rider warned for horse mistreatment at Olympics after Peta evidence
The Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) received a letter and photos that were sent to its president, Ingmar De Vos, from animal rights group Peta on Friday accusing Parro of mistreatment.
One photo shows Parro hyper-flexing Safira’s neck in a prohibited movement called Rollkur – whereby the horse’s breathing is compromised – and the FEI responded 24 hours later by warning Parro about his conduct.

Antoine Dupont wizardry gives France its Olympic moment with stunning sevens glory
The greatest player in the world. Antoine Dupont’s wizardry lit up the Olympics to deliver a moment, perhaps already the moment of Paris 2024. Fiji, for so long the kings of rugby sevens, fell under his charm. This truly was magnifique.
Rayan Rebbadj clutched his head in disbelief at full time, witnessing this tour de force up close, his teammate has not only helped dethrone the two-time Olympic champions but steamrolled them with a breathtaking second-half performance. That’s what sevens and its furious tempo will do.
And yet, Dupont is an anomaly, a contradiction to this young sport, which is fast emerging as a rival to 15s for entertainment and perhaps rugby’s answer to T20 cricket. When more than 130,000 people attend a day of rugby on the eve of the opening ceremony, you know something is brewing. And Dupont, already the master of the more traditional form of this sport, may have reimagined what’s possible here too.

Ariarne Titmus defeats rival Katie Ledecky to cement Olympic crown in 400m freestyle final
Australia’s Ariarne Titmus defended her Olympic title in the women’s 400m freestyle final ahead of Canada’s Summer McIntosh while finishing more than three seconds clear of American great Katie Ledecky.
In the highly anticipated rematch of their thrilling final in Tokyo three years ago, Titmus added to her growing reputation as she led from start to finish and executed a carefully managed race to claim a victory that at, 3:57:49, was still two seconds off her world record time.
At 17, McIntosh claimed her first Olympic medal while Ledecky, the seven-time Olympic champion, took a step closer to becoming America’s most decorated female Olympian. The 27-year-old, who is competing at her fourth Games, needs two more medals of any kind in Paris.

Olympics 2024: Rafael Nadal fuming at tennis scheduling
More complaints coming from the tennis players at Roland Garros – this time from Rafael Nadal. After playing some late-night doubles with Carlos Alcaraz this evening, the Spaniard appears to be playing early tomorrow afternoon – not ideal for his recovery.
“I’m playing at 2pm? I don’t understand, it’s 10 at night. It seems outrageous to me! I’ll have to talk to the team to see what is the best option to achieve results.”

Olympics 2024: Swimming
Matt Richards spoke to BBC TV after Team GB finished fifth in the men’s 4x100m freestyle final.
“It is frustrating, we really wanted to try and get into the medals tonight, so it is tough to have come out on the wrong side of it. I thought we all put in a great effort, all four of us, after competing this morning as well. We couldn’t have asked for much more, an honest effort and we move on to tomorrow.
On the 4x200m freestyle relay: “The relays are a huge opportunity for us, we really want to get after it and put ourselves up against the best. We will give it our all.”

Adam Peaty set for shot at Olympics history as main contender becomes clear
Adam Peaty gave a simple message before the latest step of his 100m breaststroke defence: bring the A-Game. And although not yet looking the same force as three years ago, the Olympic champion remains the one to beat as he cruised into Sunday night’s final in Paris.
A shot at history now awaits, as Peaty bids to become only the second male swimmer after Michael Phelps to win the same event at three successive Olympics.
But his closest competitor for gold is now firmly in view. China’s Qin Haiyang brings an intriguing rivalry to the Olympics and will start next to the Briton, with Peaty in his favoured lane 4 and Qin in 5. Peaty’s time of 58.86 seconds was just 0.07 ahead of Qin in their respective semi-finals, and if the margins are that tight when going for gold then it will be an electrifying race, both inside and outside of the pool.
