It was a bumper weekend of athletics away from home, with records galore at events across the UK and the states, with a flurry of medals also heading back North from the BUCS Indoor Championships.

Keely Klassic

This weekend saw the inaugural Keely Klassic event in Birmingham, with some impressive performances from a number of GB stars over the course of the day.

The notable Scottish performance of the meet was a British and Scottish Record 2:16.74 performance by Neil Gourley in the Men’s 1000m, showing he is in top form heading into the remainder of the indoor season. He finished 2nd in the event, which was won by Dutch athlete Samuel Chapple. Kane Elliott was 7th in the same event, moving into 4th on our all time list.

Alistair Street finished 2nd in the U17 Men’s 800m with an impressive 1:54.08, taking him into second on our all time list. Rebecca Scott continued a busy weekend, where she was also competing at BUCS on Friday and Sunday, to take 3rd in the Women’s Para 60m.

Elsewhere, there was a 5th place finish for Alessandro Schenini in the Long Jump and 6th for Erin Wallace in the Women’s 800m.

BUCS Indoor Athletics Championships

There was a strong contingent of Scottish athletes in Sheffield for the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) Indoor Athletics Championships, part of the BUCS Nationals weekend.

Leading the Scots home was a Gold medal and Championship Record 7.85m Long Jump performance by Stephen Mackenzie (University of Edinburgh), just 1cm shy of the Scottish Record mark set by Alessandro Schenini just 2 weeks ago.

The Scots continued to deliver in the jumps with further Golds for Rebecca Scott (Loughborough University) in the Para Long Jump (4.86m) and Henry Clarkson (Cardiff Metropolitan University) in the Men’s Triple Jump (15.37m). Amy Kennedy (University of Glasgow) picked up  a fourth Scottish Gold in the Shotput with a 15.17m throw.

There were PB runs for Cameron Thores (University of Stirling) and Alyson Bell (University of Edinburgh) over 60m, with Cameron picking up Silver in the Men’s Ambulant with a time of 7.59 and Alyson Silver in the Women’s event. Alyson’s time of 7.30s takes her to second on our all time list, just 0.03s off the Alisha Rees’ Scottish Record.

A further PB run by Bradley Francis (University of Aberdeen) saw him also take Silver in the Men’s 400m and there was a second medal for Rebecca Scott, taking Silver in the Women’s Ambulant 60m (8.51s). The Women’s 4 x 200m team from University of Strathclyde picked up yet another Silver for the Scots.

In the field, there was a Silver for Andrew McFarlane (University of Edinburgh) in the Pole Vault (4.73m) and a second place finish for guest athlete Finlay Davidson in the Para Shotput (6.45m), who was ineligible for medals. Freya Howgate (Loughborough University) took home two Bronze medals in the Para Long Jump (2.59m) and Para Shotput (7.37m), rounding off a strong meet for our Para athletes.

There were also Bronzes for Adam Hoole (Heriot-Watt University) in the 60m Hurdles (7.95) and Sofia Vidak (University of Stirling) over 800m (2:10.57).
