Doubts and speculation are over. The Kenya rugby legends are in town and will today hold the captains run at 2pm at the Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere Wakiso district.
The Kenya legends and the Uganda legends will pass on the skills to the primary kids of Kazinga Community Primary school and then the Uganda side will have the captains Run at 4 pm.
The Saturday encounter is set to be a mouthwatering one since the Uganda vs Kenya game has always been a derby at any stage.
That is what it shall be on Saturday as the two sides face-off in the first leg of the 2024 edition of the Legends game at Kings Park Arena in Bweyogerere Wakiso district.
The former Rugby Cranes stars and their Kenya Simba counterparts draw old memories and rivalry that made rugby more exciting for the fans making today’s encounter a no miss.
The debate that has lasted for decades whether Uganda’s Fiazal Gama was a better Scrum half than Kenya Simba’s Peter Tyrell is set to be decided today. However, before the verdict, Davis Kiwalabye is also set to join the mix as a scrumhalf.
Whereas Kenya targets to replicate last year’s results, Uganda is not ready for any home humiliation again.
Last year, Uganda fell 38-6 in Kampala at Kyadondo in the first leg and again 31-12 in Kenya, but hooker Alex Mubiru has ruled out a repeat of last year.
“Last year, we were just initiating the game and we were not as prepared as we are now. We have been training and we are ready for the game,” Mubiru said.
Fly-half Lavin Asego is expected to prove his golden sharp boot of the time and whether Allan Mastiko still possesses swift passes and offloads from the scrum is what will be determined during the game.
Coach Player Martial Tchumkam, Muhamed Athio, Herbert Gutaka,Dr. Paul Kabazi , Daniel Chanowira, props Bob Bibagamba, and arguably Uganda’s best ever hooker Alex Mubiru will be to hand Uganda glory.
Mathias Ochwo (lock/flanker), Edmond Tumusiime (Flyhalf), Athio Muhamed, Victor Wadia aka Nymba ya chuma, Eric Butime, Dr Tonny Luggya, Brian Tabaruka (full back), are the other legends on team Uganda.
On the other side the visitors’ finest including, Lavin Asego, Humphrey Kayange, Joel Nganga, Curtis Lilako, Edwin Machange, Michael Kimani, George Asin, Stephen Odhiambo, Vicent Mose Ben Nyambu and mark Dunford make the veteran Simbas squad.
Moses Mukabane, Edward Aseko, Victor Sudi, Lewi Maina, Felix Othieno, Wilson Kipondo, Kevin Gachoka, Sean Edward complete the squad under the stewardship of Eddie Omondi.
The veteran Simbas will be coached by Oscar Osiri and with George Mbaye aka Besigye as their team manager.
Regardless of who wins, the game will lay a strong foundation for rugby as legends motivate the young ones and leave memories of exciting rugby to the young generation.
The Legends will also pay tribute to their fallen colleagues including Deo Tumuhairwe, Robert Seguya and Benjamin Ayimba
The veteran rugby Cranes is sponsored by Nile Special, Britam Rugby Chill, and Kings Park Rugby Club.
