WWE legend John Cena reveals the worst advice he’s ever received.

Speaking in a recent interview with Complex alongside his Heads of State co-star, Idris Elba, John Cena revealed the worst advice someone has ever given him. While he didn’t name the person who gave him the advice, Cena recounted his early days when he was told to abandon his wrestling career.

“I’m not gonna give away who gave it to me, because it’s the worst of all time. I want to protect the innocent. ‘You gotta drop this wrestling thing if you want to be accepted.’ Fu*k that! 4 life!”

Thankfully, John Cena discarded that advice and continued in the pro wrestling business, as over two decades and 17 world championships later, The Franchise Player ended his career as a legend in 2025.

John Cena reacts to criticism that he dodges questions about WWE heel run

During his recent appearance at Fan Expo New Orleans, a fan asked John Cena an interesting question:  if he could replace any match from his retirement tour with a dream match, which one would he choose? Rather than focusing on fantasy scenarios.

While giving his answer, John Cena explained why he values what actually happened during his retirement tour and also wanted to clear things up about a criticism that he dodges questions about his heel run.

“There’s a perspective out there that I will dodge questions like that so I want to lean into that right? I want to lean into why I say what I say,” John Cena began.

“I don’t think like that. Because if I were to say, ‘Oh man, I wish after I turned heel that The Rock and Travis Scott were on my team.’ That would be pretty cool right? Yeah they’re crazy mega stars and having them would be pretty cool, but we didn’t. And that’s what happened, but what did I get?

Cena doesn’t want to replace anything that happened in his retirement tour

“I got to have a match with Randy Orton in his hometown,” John Cena continued, “I got to get CM Punk to go to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I got to bet on somebody who I think has a bright future in this business in Logan Paul and try and get the best out of him overseas in Paris, and maybe grease the wheels to convince him to finally be a full-time WWE employee which he currently is.

“I got magic with AJ Styles. So yes, The Rock and Travis Scott probably would have been great, who knows it didn’t happen. But what I got in return, instead of wishing some fantasy element that I can’t control, what I got in return is magic and I wouldn’t trade that for anything,” John Cena said. [H/T: Wrestletalk]
