Our weekly round-up from the UK racing scene includes the North East Counties Road Relays, Battersea Park 10km and Wrexham Half-Marathon
NORTH EAST COUNTIES ROAD RELAYS, Hetton-Le-Hole, County Durham, February 15
Morpeth Harriers took the men’s six-stage relay and it was their Peter Smallcombe who led on stage one with a 10:23 clocking ahead of Houghton’s Chris Coulson’s 10:29 and these two then remained as the fastest overall throughout the race.
Later, it was Gateshead who came through to take second, mainly thanks to Matt Linsley’s second stage 10:41.
It was a similar story in the masters’ race where Conrad Franks led the opener for Gateshead and they then never looked back but the fastest leg went to Tyne Bridge’s Jarlath McKenna at 10:57.
In the women’s race, Molly Pace gave North Shields Poly a solid lead on the opening stage before Charlotte Penfold popped in the fastest women’s lap time of 12:12 and the race was effectively over.

VILLAGE BAKERY WREXHAM HALF-MARATHON, Wales, February 16
Omah Ahmed was back on the winning trail after just losing out in the Battersea 10km less than 24 hours earlier, but it was close as Jack Martin was only about 100-metres down at the line.
The Birchfield runner’s 64:35 was his slowest return over the distance for six years but enough to see off the challenge of Martin, whose 64:54 was his fastest for six years.
Swansea’s Josh Griffiths was left nearly a minute down in third but it was fourth placed John Gilbert who caught the eye.
The Kent 44-year-old posted 65:44 to join the six-year club with his best since 2018 and Nick Torry’s M45 British best ever time of 65:40 looks there for the taking later this year.
Anna Bracegirdle won the women’s race with a three-minute victory margin over Emma Taylor, after running 73:56. Apart from a modest parkrun outing in December, it was the Salford Harrier’s first outing since a 72:45 personal best in Valencia in October.

Cameron Allan and Omar Ahmed (Top Flight)
BATTERSEA PARK 10km & 5km, London, February 15
After a couple of top four places in the two 2025 British Athletics Cross Challenge events, Cameron Allan hacked a massive 42 seconds from his previous best when handing out a solid defeat to Omar Ahmed with his 28:46 clocking.
The Houghton Harrier finished third in Glasgow and then fourth at Temple Newsam to indicate that his 2025 form is a big improvement on what went before.
Ahmed’s 28:56 saw the Birchfield man a comfortable second over Sam Gebreselassie, who just headed Owen Hind and Edward Buck in third.
Just over 100 competed and that select few included a handful of women, who were led home by Jess Gibbon’s 32:33, who was nearly a minute clear of Lauren Hall and Verity Hopkins.
Gibbon, who was second at Temple Newsam, posted a two-minute improvement on her previous best over the 10km distance

ARMAGH INTERNATIONAL RACES, Northern Ireland, February 13
Andrew Colley held on to win after breaking away with Jack Kavanagh and Sebastian Larstad in what organisers claim is one of the fastest 5km races in the world.
The three had run together before Colley launched a furious attack over the last 600 metres to win in 13:33, a time four seconds inside the previous course record.
Kavanagh, who had led his Holland Sports club up to the top flight of the Surrey cross-country league a few days earlier, narrowly secured second in 13:35, a time 13 seconds inside his previous best to head Larstad.
This was in a race where 152 runners finished inside 15 minutes.
The women raced over 3km and Verity Ockenden came good in a close race over India Weir and Amelia Quirk.
In her first race since a 55:41 outing in the Cabbage Patch 10 in October, the Swansea Harrier won by a couple of ticks in 9:05. Weir has spent recent years on the American circuit after attending The University of Washington and it was the Thames Valley Harrier’s first outing in an open road race.
Quirk, who had won the British Athletics Cross Challenge and Home International race at Leeds a few days earlier, was a close third in 9:09.
