Chelsea going into PL opener with current squad is far from ideal – Talk Chelsea

I have to admit that I am pretty disappointed that it is now looking increasingly likely that Chelsea will not have signed a new defensive midfielder before the Liverpool game.

I have been giving them the benefit of the doubt due to knowing how complex the deal to sign Moises Caicedo has been, and still is. And to be honest, I am still giving them some benefit of the doubt right now and sticking to my pledge that I will not be judging the squad or our window until I see the finished article when it’s closed.

But having said that, going into our first game against Liverpool with only two senior/experienced midfielders who can play in the six role, is far from good enough.

I will say here though, that maybe Chelsea do still get a midfielder in before Liverpool and I know that this is what they have been pushing to try and do this week. There is still time. But realistically, even if we do get one in now, is it fully ideal that they come in have one or two training sessions, and get thrown straight into the mix with new team mates against Liverpool? I’m not sure. But I guess it could still happen so I will refrain from any real annoyances here, even though I do remain frustrated and concerned that we are yet to sign a DM.

We have known that this is our most pressing position since last summer, so really, it is pretty poor that we haven’t got one in yet.

I completely get it, we are going all in for Caicedo and it’s been a game of poker and a tedious negotiation. Chelsea are trying to get the best deal possible, and Brighton have been seriously tough in these negotiations. I understand it, I really do. But even my patience will be tested if we go in to this Liverpool game with Andrey Santos, Enzo Fernandez, and Conor Gallagher being our only options to play in the pivot, honestly.

I still believe we will sign Caicedo, and I have remained patient with it due to it being such a big deal and Brighton demanding a very high fee. But starting off the Premier League season well is very important, and we are SO close to having a decent squad here and one that could get off to a good start. But I believe to do that we still need those 3-4 more signings this window, and at the time of writing, we are no closer to getting them and we are just four days off our game against Liverpool. We finally have a very good manager, so give him the tools to do the job!!

I am one of the more optimistic and positive Chelsea fans around, I like to always try and be as balanced as possible. But even I am starting to get concerned with our current squad and how it looks right now. I know this will not be the end squad, and we have a few weeks left of the window. But every Premier League game now is important, and winning a game or losing a game could literally be the difference of 2 or 3 more additions to the squad being here or not.

That is my concern. I’m prepared to wait and judge the window at the end, but if we do not get our signings done until then, how badly will it effect our performances in the league until then? That is the more than fair question that I have right now and that concerns me.
