There were bonkers scenes as Irish club St Patrick’s Athletic benefits from one of the most bizarre own goals you’ll ever see.

St Patrick’s took on Luxembourg outfit F91 Diddeleng in their Europa Conference League clash at Richmond Park on Thursday evening.

They got off to a bad start trailing 1-0 with the away side’s first counter attack on the 8th minute, making it 3-1 to F91 Diddeleng on aggregate.

But then shortly after, St Patrick’s gt one back through a very strange own goal with a ball played toward the edge of the box.

But F91 goalkeeper Didier Desprez came out to attack the ball, misjudged it, was caught between two minds, and then headed the ball only to unfortunately head it towards his own goal. And yes, thankfully there was footage of it.

A further goal for St Patrick’s brought them level on the hour mark only to concede twice more for a 3-2 defeat, eve with Dudelange having defender Ismael Sidibe sent off on 88 minutes, meaning a 4-2 loss over the two legs.

St Patrick’s Athletic: Lyness; Brockbank (Norman, h-t), Curtis, McGrath (McCormack, 87), Breslin; Mulraney, Lennon, Timmermans (Murphy, h-t), M. Doyle (E. Doyle, 67); Forrester; Carty (Lonergan, 80).

F91 Dudelange: Desprez; Delorge, Decker, Sidibe; Ouassiero (Moussaka, 79), Agovic (Bojic, 79, Freire, Kuete (Diouf, 86); Roemer (Schaus, 90+6); Van Lingen, Hadji.

Referee: Edgars Maļcevs (Latvia).

Attendance: 2,534

St Patrick’s manager Jonn Daly said post-match: “Obviously disappointed, I thought first half we gave a lot of opportunities away and we you know we’re probably very fortunate to come in at one more and a half time and we’ve also made a couple of changes Adam’s obviously stepped up and got a fantastic goal to put his two one up and then we make a a very very basic error.

“We spoke about, kind of, you know all the preparation was playing passes into midfield playing around the midfield missing them passes out not playing them passes but we chose the player pass into midfield that wasn’t on because it gets intercepted and then compound that mistake by come and charge you know to try and win I make up for a mistake instead of maybe dropping and deepening and killing the space behind but it’s it’s a tough tough lesson for us because we’ve been punished um for a mistake but at that stage of the game I think it was still 23/24 minutes to go so still plenty of time to recover that I felt we had a kind of few minutes where we we were probably feeling again feeling sorry for ourselves and that is something we need to get better at as a group you know where when we have a disappointed moment we need to deal better with it and we can’t change it you can’t fix it but you can certainly impact the next uh the next one.

“So um yeah it’s disappointing I think 2-1 would probably look like we were a team in the ascendancy that we’re gonna maybe be a team that are going at the next goal um and then obviously the last goal then we’re trying to throw bodies trying to get that goal and you get you get caught on the break and um so yeah it’s disappointed as I said the boys are obviously they feel like we’ve let one go and I agree with them.”
