The Ospreys have sought clarity on Max Nagy’s Welsh qualification status – with the 24-year-old being a potential full-back candidate for Wales as Warren Gatland looks to replace Liam Williams and Leigh Halfpenny.

With Halfpenny retired from international rugby and Williams now unavailable following his move to Japan, there’s a need to find a new crop of full-backs to take over from the two men who have dominated the jersey for the past decade.
Cai Evans, Tom Rogers and Cardiff duo Cameron Winnett and Jacob Beetham could all be options, but having the 6ft 4in Nagy also available would be a boost for Gatland moving forward.
Nagy, who hails from Buckinghamshire, has been a Welsh resident since September 2018 – which is when he began studying at Swansea University.

During his time at Swansea University, he signed for Swansea RFC and was also part of the Ospreys Development side.
The confusion, which the Ospreys are now awaiting clarity on, surrounds whether his time as a student counts towards his residency status. If it does, then he should be free to play for Wales immediately. If it does not, then Nagy would have to wait until next year at the earliest – three years on from when when he is understood to have finished his studies.
If Nagy was still classed as a student in any way after the extended five-year residency rule came into force in December 2021, he would potentially not be Welsh qualified until 2027.
World Rugby’s Regulation 8 states that being a student is “likely to be considered as a series of temporary absences from the parental home”, adding that the parental home is “likely to continue to constitute the student’s permanent and primary home”.
However, there “could be circumstances in which a student living in another country may wish to elect to commence a new period of residency in the country in which they are studying, for example where the Player is attending college/university (having reached the age of majority) in the jurisdiction of another Union and has relocated there on a permanent basis”.
In those cases, the relevant Union and player are advised to request a ruling from the Regulations Committee to “ensure compliance in advance of the Player representing the Union”.

Nagy had previously had a spell with home-town Buckingham RFC after being released by Northampton’s academy, as well as spending some time playing in New Zealand.
It’s not fully clear whether Nagy is keen to represent Wales, but the fact his club have sought clarification on his qualification status at least moves us one step closer to that possibility.
“To be honest, that’s a bit more the off-field politics stuff,” said Nagy last week when asked about qualifying for Wales through residency. “That’s not stuff that’s in my control. I’m just going to focus on my rugby here at the Ospreys and do the best I can for the team.”
However, his club coach Toby Booth made reference to the fact last week that the Ospreys were hopeful of him qualifying on residency soon.
“Max Nagy has been in the country for quite a while as a student,” said Booth. “He’s a person who will potentially qualify at some point.”
