Chelsea are not expected to hand Calum McFarlane the permanent manager role this summer.
McFarlane delighted as Chelsea reach FA Cup final
McFarlane was handed the role of interim manager until the end of the season following Liam Rosenior’s departure, and the 40-year-old led his side to an FA Cup final in his first match in charge.
The Blues booked their place at Wembley on May 16th, when they will take on domestic treble-hunting Manchester City, courtesy of a 1-0 victory against rivals Leeds United, with Enzo Fernandez scoring the decisive goal after 23 minutes.
The west Londoners’ Premier League form has been less impressive, losing five matches on the spin, which cost Rosenior his job, and BlueCo have now started looking at a range of replacements for the 41-year-old.
Even though BlueCo already have a number of options to choose from, they have added another exciting option to the shortlist, according to a report from Caught Offside, which states they are plotting a blockbuster move for ex-Barcelona manager Xavi.
The legendary former Barca midfielder is regarded as a dream target for Chelsea, but there is a feeling it could be difficult to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge.
Across spells with Barcelona and Qatari side Al-Sadd SC, the 46-year-old has lifted eight trophies, including the La Liga title in the 2022-23 season, so he certainly has the pedigree to replace Rosenior, despite not having any Premier League experience.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is also a massive fan of the Spaniard, taking the time to laud him during his spell at the Camp Nou.
It was always going to be difficult for Rosenior to stay in his job, after losing five Premier League games on the spin without conceding a single goal, but Wayne Rooney believes the players must take their share of the blame.
The former Manchester United star has suggested the players “100%” downed tools and cost the former Strasbourg boss his job.
Perhaps there wasn’t enough respect for Rosenior, given his CV before landing the Chelsea job, but Xavi’s career as a player and a manager speaks for itself.
The new Thomas Tuchel is now “keen” on getting the Chelsea job
Chelsea have a number of managers in their crosshairs.
