CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Utah State women’s tennis completed its first round of fall play at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open on Friday.
Three Aggie duos started the day off in doubles play. Senior Lisa Küng and freshman Ana Chavez Sanchez earned one of USU’s doubles wins with a 7-6 victory against UTRGV’s Isabelle Bahr and Marjorie Souza. Senior Laura Fernanda Eugenio De Hilario and sophomore Magdalena Nunez Pureco picked up the second and final doubles win for the Aggies in a 7-5 victory over their Lamar University opponents.
Following doubles play, eight Aggies competed in the open singles draw of the day’s matches.
Küng earned Utah State’s first singles win of the day with a 6-4, 7-5 straight-set win over Lamar’s Nouray Metwally.
Following Küng’s win, Utah State freshman Niyati Kukreti fell in a tiebreak against Texas State’s Callie Creath while fifth year Zeynep Naz Ozturk and Pureco were defeated in straight sets.
Hilario and Sanchez followed with tiebreaker victories as junior Indya Nespor notched a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win to complete the Aggie wins for the day.
Freshman Savannah Johnson competed in the Flight X draw which includes three other players in a round-robin style play. Johnson fell short in a straight-set loss today against UTRGV’s Valentina Urraco.
Utah State returns to the courts for singles and doubles play on Saturday, Sept 9.
