Sunderland have the last laugh with a home derby day win against Newcastle via Nick Woltemade’s own goal on Sunday afternoon.
It was quite a welcome from the Sunderland fans as Newcastle fans were escorted into the Stadium of Light, and then the same for the players.
It was first time since March 2016 that the two sides are playing each other in a Premier League fixture, with the Black Cats mocking back into potential European spots.
Woltemade’s own goal decided the derby on Wearside as Sunderland beat Newcastle 1-0. German striker headed beyond his own goalkeeper to send Sunderland up to 7th in the table.

Sunderland defender Dan Ballard, speaking to Sky Sports: “You cannot describe [the feeling]. It was so painful [losing 3-0 at home to Newcastle in the FA Cup in January 2024] for the players and for the fans so we felt we had let them down so we’re delighted with this win.
“It prepared us more for today. We came in with more quality in this team, real leaders, we stuck in there, fought really hard and I thought we deserved the win.
“There was not much in the game in terms of chances. When you go a goal ahead it’s about game management and I thought we did that very well – the boys were brilliant.”
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, speaking to Sky Sports: “Derbies, you have to win, it does not matter how. This team deserves much more and more respect as where we are in the league is amazing and we’re working really hard.
“In the first half we had much more control with the ball but it’s normal you don’t do it for 90 minutes. After 1-0 the game changed a bit, but we were very good without the ball and we deserved the three points for sure.”

Sunderland manager Regis le Bris, talking to Sky Sports, said: “Proud and happy. It was a derby and we were expected [to win] by our fans. This win is well deserved, we were mature and the lads were incredible.
“During the first half tactically it was really good, just small details about the shape, then it was a question of being more clinical in the final third. We had good control and some times were more patient.
“It was a good level of maturity, so happy for the lads and it is good for our fans.
“It’s good for the region, the club, the fans. We knew before it was a special game but we have to reset quickly as we have another tough challenge in Brighton in one week so let’s go again.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “It was not our finest game. The effort was there but the quality was not. It was a game of really few chances decided by a freak goal and we could not create the opening we wanted.
“The goal came at a really bad time and was bad in its construction – Nick has not meant to do it but it has decided the game. I thought we had defended pretty well.
“The quality was missing in both halves, we were disappointed with our creative output. There was more intensity and more bravery on the ball after the changes without creating the chances and their goalkeeper was not overworked.
“We know how much this means and all the focus on today was huge. We tried to deliver our best performance and we haven’t done that. We feel disappointed in ourselves and that we left something on the pitch and that’s a horrible feeling.”
On Dan Burn going off with a rib injury: “Dan Burn has gone to hospital for a check of his ribs so hopefully he will be OK.”
Here’s how fans reacted as Sunderland have the last laugh with a derby day win against Newcastle via Woltemade’s own goal…
@beasty86: Get everything single one of them fans refunded…. that was one of the worst performances I have ever seen…not one had an ounce of pride in the shirt they were wearing…
@LukePlayIe: I really hope he gets sacked now, 0 plan B for weeks, that performance was the icing on the cake. They wanted it more from the first minute, cheers for ruining another weekend lads @NUFC 🫠
@AlfieFalcus:
No fight
No heart
No desire
No passion
No quality
It didn’t even take us going a goal up to sit back this time. Howe needs to leave or he needs to take a break and come back next season.
@lebs: Mukiele mocking/absolutely taking the piss out of Bruno when winning a throw in and the fans laughing is one of my favorite moments of the season so far #safc
@GatesheadLad23: This was for you Gary Rowell, we are definitely back, we beat Newcastle and we are now the top dogs in the North East. A fantastic result, it means so much. Sunderland till I die ❤️❤️❤️ #SAFC #Sunderland
@John77Angus: THEY putting this on Howe, wow, loads saying he sent them out to play like that. Fuck me if your players need to be coached to play in this game and you also think that then @NUFC really isn’t the club it used to be.
@past_sunderland: Worst part about that for Newcastle fans should be how quiet their fans were, from the off. Absolutely silent. #SAFC
@rduggan16: Unlucky lads, maybe spend another 750m and then maybe, just maybe we’ll let yous have a chance #safc
@mickroper81: Love Chris Rigg rounding the troops at the end of the game for the team photo! Once a mackem always a mackem #safc
@UnderTheLight73: Supposed best midfielder in the world subbed off. Supposed best defender in the world ragged about by Brobbey. Then supposed best striker in the world scores! For Sunderland. Thanks for coming lads #SAFC
@OverTheToon: That first half of sitting back completely set the tone for the game. Only 1 team wanted that and they were playing in red and white. Needed to change things at HT it was glaringly obvious. Pathetic, weak display from the entire squad and staff. Awful mentality. #nufc #safc
@MagnificoMags: Absolutely awful performance. We didn’t offer anything and they didn’t either. Shite game with 0-0 written all over it and it’s annoying it was settled on an OG. Hall our best player followed by Bruno and everyone else was shockingly bad. Not competing is unacceptable.
@S0uthernGe0rdie: Took 93 mins to show a little something. Set up wrong. Spineless. Pathetic. Embarrassing. It’s been a pleasure but that’s a sackable display on its own. #nufc
This is what it means.
There’s no feeling like that anywhere else in the world. A day, a performance and a result to be treasured by #SAFC fans young and old, near and far.
My fucking club ❤️ pic.twitter.com/QzXJkkM9h3
