Emily Bett Rickards’ latest movie, The Queen of the Ring, has become one of the most talked-about films in the realm of professional wrestling. It is a film is a biography of wrestling legend Mildred Burke. Many wrestlers had attended the movie’s red carpet event. One of them was the current NWA Women’s World Champion, Kenzie Paige.
During a recent interview with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard, Kenzie Paige shared her experience at the Queen of the Ring red carpet. She mentioned that she got to meet stars like Mickie James and Mick Foley. Also, her former rival, Kamille, was at the event, as she played June Byers in the movie.
“It was really crazy because me and my little sister Kylie. Obviously, we went to the premiere. And I was even telling her on the car ride back home, it was crazy like, you look to the right, it is Kamille, Jerry Lynn, and all those people. And you look to the left, it was Mickie James and Mick Foley was there. I told her, I was like, ‘Girl, we are surrounded by these people and the whole thing that we are watching is literally about the championship that I wear around my waist every weekend. First, I want to say this, seeing that movie and seeing that on the big screen, and then also I felt like, it opened the door for people, to obviously we respect women’s wrestling.”
Kenzie Paige on how Mildred Burke paved the way for the current female wrestlers
Paige also praised and thanked wrestling legend Mildred Burke. She mentioned that if it wasn’t for Burke, Paige and other female wrestlers would not be a part of the industry. The Princess also shared that WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley was a fan of Mildred Burke.
“But that was where you got to see like, ‘Damn, it’s not been easy. It’s been a hard road.’ And had Mildred not gone through what she went through, would I be sitting here today? Will Kamille be sitting there today? Would Mickie James be there today? You know what I mean? It was almost like, we all know the stories and we know it was harder for women. But when you see it on the big screen, it really is an eye-opener.
“And it’s crazy that one woman changed, well not just one woman, but in that circumstance, Mildred changed a lot of lives and really did walk so we could run. But being around everyone and hearing the stories, like Mick Foley told stories about Mildred Burke and how he was a fan of hers and this and that. It was just, it put in perspective to me like, this is a big deal. Holding the Burke day in day out, 625 plus days like you said, that means something. And you know, it’s always meant something to me in my heart.
Kenzie Paige claims the Queen of the Ring put things in perspective
“But I do feel like sometimes, like does it go unnoticed? Maybe. But whenever I see it on screen, it’s like, all the work that I put in, everything that I went through, means something to someone. So, that was a very big… I expect to share that moment with my sister. Me and my sister were very tight and very close. But to be able to share that moment with her almost was like once again like I said, it was like the universe was just watching out for me. And was like, putting me exactly where I needed to be at the right time.
“Seeing the things that I needed to see. And like I said, before this match, it really is a big eye-opener. Nattie is coming for the Burke. So, clearly it means something. She is in the biggest company in the world. And she’s worried about the Burke. You know what I mean? So, all of it is one big circle. But that really puts stuff in perspective for me of like, this is more… This is more than a championship right? This is history.”
