Manchester Area Cross Country League, Kenworthy Woods, February 8

Sale Harrier Arlo Ludewick emerged a convincing winner of the senior men’s race, on a cold and biting Saturday afternoon, at Kenworthy Woods, Stephen Green reports.

Freddie Roden from the University of Manchester set a searing pace in the first two miles with Ludewick comfortable in the chasing pack. Around mid-race, he employed his 3:41 1500m speed to pull away on the flat area before the ‘Chorlton Alps’ series of climbs.

The Sale Harrier extended his lead to 16 seconds by the tape over under-20 Roden, with Callum Rowlinson moving in third around 40 metres down. Sale Harriers were the team winners, with three in the top 10.

Emily Haggard Kearney (Harry Shakeshaft)

Emily Haggard Kearney continued her remarkable streak of victories in the league to score a resounding victory in the senior women’s race. Haggard Kearney, fresh from a recent win at the Northern 3000m indoors, took control from the gun, making light of the playing fields and wooded sections.

Her margin of victory was over 90 seconds, with under-20 Olivia Lloyd Jones in second, and Salford Harrier Laura Lombard (W40) coming in third around 200 metres down.

Chorlton Runners, led by Katherine Fitzpatrick in fifth, took the team spoils on the day.

Liam Johnson of St Helen’s Sutton was a runaway winner of the under-17 men’s race, with Jay Hutchinson second, around 250 metres, in arrears and Michael Wood in third. In the under-17 women’s race Holly Cross of Liverpool came home 150 metres clear of Isobel Hall, with Constance Johnstone third.

Isla Yorke, of Warrior’s pulled 10 seconds clear of Robyn Heywood-Young, with Caitlin Wetters third, in the under-15 girls’ race. Macclesfield Harrier Jake Ireland scored a runaway win, a minute clear of Thomas Wood, with Harry Shatwell, third in the under-15 boys’ event.

Eve Beddow led a one-two for Warrior’s in the under-13 girls’ race pulling clear of Daisy McVicar, with Imogen Weatherhead, third. In the under-13 boys’ race, Noah Phillips of Sale edged Alistair Riley on the tape by two seconds, with Ethan Statham, third.

BIRMINGHAM LEAGUE, Division 1, Match 4, Leamington, Warwickshire, February 8

The division 1 match at Newbold Comyn, a venue that has hosted the Midland championships in recent years, stood alone this year as the women’s top flight opted to meet with the division two men’s fixture.

It was the host club’s Callum Hanlon who came out on top for the second match in a row after posting his maiden league win in the January race and with it the league title.

Second home was Western Tempo’s Dan Gillett, who led his club to a solid team win over Birmingham University, but the students had done enough in earlier rounds to just scrape home with the league title.

Further back, Birchfield’s Ed Banks, champion last winter, continued his run as top veteran in the league with another masterly performance.

CHILTERN LEAGUE, Match 5, Oxford, February 8

The league’s final match was held over the long-serving Horspath course with it steep up and later fast downhill runs and Marcus Shantry moved up from third in the January match to win this and relegate January winner Jed Noblett to a beaten second.

Whilst Bedford & County retained control of the league overall, it was Wycombe Phoenix who came out overall on top here but there was an end of term feeling as numbers were don on previous rounds.

In the senior women’s event, it was Rebecca Murray who posted another victory, her tenth in the last few years.

The Denis Orme Trophy was awarded to Redway Runners who increased their participation in the league by 53.5 percent to 244. This was someway behind the club with the biggest numbers which was St Albans with 420.

KENT LEAGUE, Bromley, February 8

Eastern Championships runner-up Liam White had his biggest win to date when he comfortably won the final league fixture at a wet and muddy Norman Park, Steve Smythe reports.

The Tunbridge Wells Harrier led home a trio of Tonbridge athletes headed by Lewis Mills.

James Crombie and former UK under-18 800m record-holder Sean Molloy followed closely, as Tonbridge easily won on the day and over the season in the four to score event, though Medway and Maidstone won the 12-man trophy on the day.

Cambridge’s Bobby Babaker finished fifth despite very badly turning his ankle but had the consolation of winning the overall league, as M50 Allan Lee led home the masters contingent in sixth overall.

Chloe Sharp won her fifth successive league race and with it the women’ league title as she and Blackheath and Bromley continued their dominance of the women’s races.

Team-mate Millie Smith gained her fifth successive league runner-up spot as she again followed home Sharp and helped the hosts win both the four and six to score team events on the day and the season.

Kent Masters overall champion and W50 Renata McDonnnell of Invicta completed the top three.

Cambridge Harrier Amelia Lawrence was the leading under-20 in fifth.

SURREY LEAGUE Div 1, Match 4A, Epsom Downs, February 8

The top flight divisions in both the men’s and women’s sections made a long-awaited return to Epsom Downs after previously being told that the runners cut up the ground too much at this time of year.

Thames Hare & Hounds’ second claimer Jeremy Dempsey, the 2024 Inter-Counties sixth placer, notched up his first Surrey League win as Belgrave Harriers won the team plaudits on the day but could not prevent holders Hercules Wimbledon completing another league championship victory.

There may have been an absence of ‘names’ at the head of the field, but there were still nearly 250 runners from the ten competing clubs, but Woking and Epsom & Ewell were a little out of their depth in Division 1 and drop down a tier for next winter

In the young athletes’ races, Alex Lennon, the South of England champion two weeks earlier, again led his Sutton & District club to another team win in the under-17 age group after his third successive individual victory.

Lucy Jones, the 2024 London Champion, scored another league win, her third of the campaign and did so by nearly a minute over Belgrave Harriers’ Juliette Hodder. Her Herne Hill team just pipped their rivals in the team stakes on the day, but it was Belgrave who took the overall team title.

Sabrina Coppola-Johansen, the South of England under-17 bronze medallist, took her third league win of the winter and with it the overall individual title.

SURREY LEAGUE, Match 4B, Croydon, February 8

Lloyd Park has been a banker venue for both the league and Surrey championships and, this time the three races for the lower divisions of the men’s league, went ahead along with the women’s division 2.

Holland Sports’ Jack Kavanagh continued his winning streak in the league and led his club to a team win and promotion to the top flight.

There he will find things a bit harder but his quality might well help his club succeed next winter when other recent promoted clubs have failed.

The margin of victory this time, from his Holland Sports’ second claim club mate Kieran Barnes, was much reduced, as top veteran Andy Coley–Maud who has switched from Guildford & Godalming after doing the same from Clapham, followed to make it an Holland Sports 1,2,3.

Ranelagh Harriers, a previous ever-present in Division 1 are condemned to another season out of the limelight after finishing third in the final standings.

The lower divisional women also raced and it was Hannah Norman, from London City who came out on top

Start Fitness Metropolitan League, Trent Park, February 8

Jamie Dee, son of international Billy Dee and from a running family, was only ninth in the previous Met League at Welwyn but he made no mistake at Trent Park, AlastairAitken reports.

It was a hard race in the mud and driving cold rain, but Dee was at his best on the day with 398 completing the mud strewn course, including Stuart Man at the age of 80.

Highgate Harriers scored all their 12 in the first 25 places to win the event outright for the 13th year running.

London Heathside had often been usually the winners of the women’s race in the last few years but Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets came home not only for the first team in the senior women’s league but also had the second team in as well!

Ciara Boyd-Squires was first woman home.

SUSSEX LEAGUE, Match 5, Brighton, February 8

Stanmer Park is always the fall-back option for the league with its tough chalky hills and steep downhill plunges and Brighton & Hove City’s James Turner took advantage of local knowledge to lead his club to a series of team wins.

It was his first race following an 11th spot in the World 100km championships in Bangalore in December.

The women’s race again also included, the under-17 women and Ava James made it a Brighton & Hove double with a narrow victory over Imogen Matthews.

It was James’ second win of the winter league after winning the November fixture in the colours of Lewes AC.

In the younger races, Isabella Buchanan, who was second in the delayed English National under-13 championships in December, notched up her third under-15 league win of the campaign.
