vB Race Start Lists – The Monument Mile Classic

It’s not all that often that the university track at Stirling is centre-stage for athletics in Scotland – and beyond.

But that is sure to be the case this coming Saturday afternoon and evening with the latest edition of the Monument Mile Classic.

With support from committed sponsors, race organiser Michael Wright has developed an event which effectively spans mass participation (in track terms) and elite competition – with an international element – at the end of the evening.

No fewer than 32 track miles races are scheduled at the Stirling track venue in the shadow of the Wallace Monument as men, women and youngsters take on the classic distance.

Then, from around 9pm, it will be time for top athletes to chase PBs and indeed a sub four-minute mile run for the top men.

The Elite Women’s race is off at 9.30pm with the pace asked for being between 4:24 and 4:38.

The Elite Men’s race is off at 9.40m with the pace asked for being between 3:50 and 3:56.

There will be live stream coverage across YouTube by organisers the Monument Mile Classic. And finish line flames, of course.

Prize money is area where this event has grown significantly and the winners of those two top races will each take home £850 (and more if Records are broken).

In fact, the top three athlete for those two races will share £3000.

In the Women’s Elite A Race, there is a strong contingent of US Athletes in Jenn Randall, Taryn Rawlings, Taylor Werner, and Rachel McArthur.

The race will also feature European talent in Paris Olympian Vera Hoffman, Norwegian Anne Ginen LØVNES, Spaniard Idaria Prieto and Finland’s Laura Maasik.

In terms of Scots, the race will feature Native Record Holder Sarah Calvert, 2021 Champion Hannah Cameron and VP Glasgow’s Jill Cherry.

On the men’s side of things, the races will feature athletes from Olympians to NCAA record holders, from National Champions to National Record Holders.

It will prove to be the strongest field in the history of the Classic with the likes of NCAA Mile Record Holder, 3:50 Miler and 2023 1500m US Champion Cooper Teare sure to be prominent.

There also is a host of European Elites such as Belgian international and 3:52 Miler/National Indoor Record Holder Thomas Vanoppen.

British talent in the race will include Henry McLuckie, James Gormley, James Young, Osian Perrin and Kane Elliott and Andrew McGill.

With thanks to Aidan Gilbride and Michael Wright
