MOUNT VERNON — A young Central College men’s tennis team played 21 singles and doubles matches at the Cornell Invitational Sunday.

The competition consisted of athletes from Central, Cornell College, Augustana College (Ill.) and Grinnell College. There were four flights of singles matches and four flights of double matches but no individual titles were awarded. Central was 6-15 in singles and 4-5 in doubles.

“It was a solid day overall for the Dutch,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “We’ve got a lot of new pieces on our roster and it was fun to watch them go. It was a little like Christmas morning with all of the new presents under the tree.”

Nick Scott (senior, Fort Benton, Mont., Great Falls Central Catholic HS) was a 6-3, 2-0 (retired) winner over Alexander Hadler of Cornell College in the A-Flight of singles. Cashen Thompson (freshman, Pella) added a 1-6, 6-2, 12-10 win over Cornell’s Mills Arnold in the B-Flight.

Scott and Travis Subbert (freshman, McKinney, Texas/North HS) won 8-3 over Cornell’s Alexander Hadler and Zachary Ong in the A-Flight doubles. AJ Wilkins (junior, Grinnell) and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (freshman, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) took down Cornell’s Mills Arnold and Trent Devore 8-4 in a B-Flight match.

“We were trying to figure out some potential doubles pairings so we mixed those up to see how it went,” Ferrell said.

Central is the host school for the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Friday and Saturday, with matches to be played at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex, Caldwell Park and Pella Christian High School

“Today was a neat day,” Ferrell said. “I’m excited about the future and what we are building. We’ve got more work to do and matches to play this fall but we’re on a nice path.”
