Editor’s observe: This story was initially revealed on Sept. 21. It was up to date Nov. 23.
In 2004, when Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton paired Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods collectively at Oakland Hills, it was thought of daring.
Not as a result of it was the No. 2- and No. 4-ranked gamers on this planet enjoying collectively in a single group, however as a result of Mickelson and Woods had a rivalry that was thought of unfriendly. The 2 did not say as a lot publicly, however it was identified that they weren’t sharing bottles of wine or evaluating calves off the course.
They have been companions in two classes and got here away with zero factors.
In hindsight, that rivalry now appears benign in comparison with what present Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker handled: the feud between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.
The truth that Mickelson and Woods have been paired collectively in any respect reveals how rather more animosity there’s between DeChambeau and Koepka, who mentioned previous to the occasion that we should not count on the 2 to play collectively at Whistling Straits. Koepka went as far to say that they will not be hanging out at night time or high-fiving after any victories, both.
They each agreed to put the feud aside for the week for the great of the crew to attempt to assist the US to victory over Europe. However even that required a dialog with Stricker and the latter having to behave like a mother or father warning their younger kids that in the event that they act up in entrance of firm, they will be grounded.
Whether or not it was these conversations, the crew facet of the Ryder Cup or the truth that generally profitable heals all, we truly noticed the meat put apart and we even noticed some friendliness between the 2 golfers after America’s victory within the type of a massive bro hug.
Whether or not we’ll truly see them proceed to place the meat apart, or if we’ll see two children despatched to their rooms yelling, “He began it,” is not the purpose. It is that it has gotten to a degree that it must be addressed and the 2 will probably be compelled to be civil in what is meant to be the sport’s best crew occasion.
Earlier than the Ryder Cup, the conflict has taken on such a wave of momentum that PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan introduced a brand new rule geared towards followers yelling, “Brooksy” at DeChambeau throughout tournaments. Violations may get fans tossed from occasions.
How did it get up to now that the 2 hugging it out within the postmatch information convention went viral? To setting a 12-hole match for this Friday (4 p.m. ET on TNT)? What began this back-and-forth and why has it escalated to the purpose that the adults within the room needed to step in to cease it?
It began with sluggish play
Earlier than this all moved to social media, Koepka made a remark in January 2019 about sluggish play on the Dubai Desert Traditional.
He did not point out DeChambeau by identify, however on the time, DeChambeau was on the heart of dialog for his methodical method to every shot.
“I simply do not perceive the way it takes a minute and 20 seconds, a minute and 15 to hit a golf ball; it isn’t that onerous,” Koepka mentioned on the time. “It is at all times between two golf equipment. There is a miss brief, there is a miss lengthy. It actually drives me nuts particularly when it is a lengthy hitter as a result of you understand you have obtained two different guys or at the least one man that is hitting earlier than you, so you are able to do all of your calculations, you need to have your numbers.”
DeChambeau was requested about it, however responded subtly that so much goes right into a shot and there is a number of calculating he is doing in 45 seconds.
Quick ahead to August on the Northern Belief, when a video of DeChambeau taking more than three minutes to hit a 70-yard shot went viral.
anybody want a nap?

One other video went viral that week, displaying DeChambeau taking greater than two minutes to learn an 8-foot putt on the eighth gap. The video confirmed enjoying companions Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood visibly bored by the period of time it was taking to learn the putt, solely to observe DeChambeau miss the birdie attempt to faucet in for par.
It was exhausting to! ⏰
— Justin Thomas (@JustinThomas34) August 10, 2019
Different gamers, together with Luke Donald, Wealthy Beem, Joel Dahmen, Eddie Pepperell and Ian Poulter, criticized the video on social media and have been vocal that the tour wanted to step in and do one thing concerning the tempo of play.
And in spite of everything that miss learn it by 2 cups 🤦🏼♂️
— Luke Donald (@LukeDonald) August 10, 2019
Simply take a look at Tommy and Justin, each trying utterly bored. Gradual gamers do that to their enjoying companions making the sport much less pleasurable. Drawback is, the unaffected single minded twit on this occasion, would not care a lot for others.
— Eddie Pepperell (@PepperellEddie) August 10, 2019
That, in fact, induced DeChambeau to go on the defensive and discuss concerning the criticism he has acquired. He believed it was unfair and pointed to various factors all through a spherical that may contribute to sluggish play.
DeChambeau additionally famous that there have been different gamers who have been additionally habitually sluggish and that when folks begin speaking about his sluggish play and the way he’s killing the sport, it was unfounded criticism.
“Positive, Eddie Pepperell, not honest to say. I’d love to talk to him personally and discuss it, as a result of I performed with him, truly, at WGC-Mexico. We are able to discuss that point that we performed it in,” DeChambeau mentioned on the time. “While you begin personally attacking folks on Twitter, it is like, come on, dude. Let’s have some extra, I used to be going to say one thing else, however let’s have some extra balls and converse to me to my face about that.”
Koepka did not say something extra publicly about DeChambeau on the time, so whether or not or not there was one thing mentioned behind the scenes or that made its technique to DeChambeau by way of different channels, it is unknown.
One thing induced DeChambeau to confront Koepka’s caddie, Ricky Elliott, on the follow inexperienced. He advised Elliott that if Koepka has one thing to say about his sluggish play, he ought to say it to his face.
Was standing on the placing inexperienced with Koepka’s caddie earlier when an irritated Bryson DeChambeau walked up & advised him to inform his boss to make any remark about sluggish play “to my face”. Brooks arrived quickly after, obtained the message & ambled over for a chat with the scientist.
— Eamon Lynch (@eamonlynch) August 11, 2019
Koepka mentioned he discovered that ironic that DeChambeau did not go to his face to say it, however moderately by way of his caddie, however he didn’t instantly go on the offensive. The 2 appeared to have labored one thing out on the time and had a personal dialog on Sunday of the event concerning the brewing feud.
DeChambeau felt as if he was singled out by Koepka in his feedback earlier within the 12 months and that had snowballed into heavier criticism from a number of angles.
“It isn’t simply him. I do know he feels singled out, particularly after I’m talking about it,” Koepka mentioned on the time. “However it’s like I advised him, I’ve talked about his identify as soon as, and that is it. There’s so many guys out right here the place it is grow to be a difficulty, and clearly him being in all probability the perfect participant that is comparatively sluggish proper now, he’ll be on TV much more, so you are going to catch much more of these kind of situations.”
DeChambeau acknowledged the dialog and mentioned it was productive. That the 2 talked about what Koepka had mentioned and it was defined that it was a generalized remark, not meant to simply single out DeChambeau or one individual.
That dialog led to each golfers agreeing they need to preserve their feedback inside, that they should not go public with criticism and will attempt to preserve any disagreements or verbal spats in home.
“It was nice. I mentioned, ‘I feel we obtained to start out internally so we do not have these points come out in public and it creates a nasty picture for the PGA Tour,” DeChambeau mentioned. “We by no means need that. So, it was nice. We had an important dialog, and have a brand new degree of respect for him.”
That dialog appeared to squash any potential points that might transfer ahead they usually each even appeared on SiriusXM radio along with Pat Perez and Michael Collins, the place DeChambeau admitted to his sluggish play on the greens. There was even some jovial banter between the 2 with DeChambeau saying Koepka would win in a combat and that, “He’d kick my ass.”
Drawback solved, proper? Nope.
It is all about The Physique
In January 2020, Koepka appeared in ESPN The Magazine’s The Body Issue with different athletes displaying off their physique.
DeChambeau both did not know the way livestreaming works or did not care, as a result of he criticized Koepka’s physique whereas livestreaming himself enjoying a online game on Twitch.
“I do not know if his genetics even make him look good, to be sincere,” DeChambeau mentioned on video. “That Physique Concern, he did not have any abs, I can let you know that. I obtained some abs.”

— Eric Patterson (@EPatGolf) January 15, 2020
That went towards what Koepka and DeChambeau had agreed upon beforehand, to maintain any points in-house and never make any statements public, so the selection of phrases was unusual, to say the least. Particularly provided that on the platform, a video will be recorded and shared on social media.
— Brooks Koepka (@BKoepka) January 16, 2020
That appeared like a light-hearted jab again at DeChambeau. Possibly DeChambeau’s criticism was made in jest, as effectively, however both manner, we did not see a lot public bickering till July 2020, on the Rocket Mortgage Traditional in Detroit.
The tour had simply returned from its pandemic shutdown and DeChambeau was that includes his new, bulked-up physique and distance off the tee. He had everybody noticing how far he was hitting the ball, however some questioning how he gained a lot weight so rapidly.
DeChambeau had a confrontation with a cameraman throughout the event after hitting the sand in anger in a bunker. He felt the cameraman was focusing an excessive amount of on him for too lengthy to seize his outburst. The 2 had a dialog.
Koepka, who was not enjoying within the event, took discover.
— Brooks Koepka (@BKoepka) July 7, 2020
Later within the month, on the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, DeChambeau hit an errant tee shot close to a tree and on high of a stick on the seventh gap. He known as over a guidelines official to see if he may get reduction as a result of he believed his ball was resting on an anthill.
He hoped for reduction below the harmful animal situation, by saying his ball was on a hearth ant nest and the hearth ants have been doubtlessly harmful. Harmful to what or whom, who is aware of.
He was not given reduction.
Throughout the second spherical of the event, Koepka hit a tee shot out to the left, within the tough close to some timber, and joked to his caddie that he noticed an ant. The dialogue was picked up by cameras and microphones and, in fact, went viral.
— Skratch (@Skratch) July 31, 2020
Koepka did not point out DeChambeau by identify within the steroid tweet or his ant comment, however it may be surmised they have been geared toward DeChambeau. Much like his remark on the PGA Championship about his profitable play.
He advised a reporter in an interview that there is no motive to be scientific with the numbers, that he’ll simply exit and play. That may not have been focused, however DeChambeau’s nickname is the Mad Scientist.
“I’m enjoying so good…”

Issues appeared to chill down for some time. Koepka complimented DeChambeau earlier than the Masters in November 2020. DeChambeau was considering utilizing a 48-inch driver for the event and Koepka mentioned that size is at all times a bonus and that DeChambeau has finished a great job working to hit the ball so far as he does.
One eye roll adjustments every little thing

Lewis tells Koepka they are going to have enjoyable with that blooper and Koepka mentioned he would not care if it was launched. Naturally, it was leaked by somebody and went viral very quickly.
DeChambeau noticed the video and commented on an Instagram account that posted the incident, saying, “You recognize you’ll be able to repair spike marks now.” He was seemingly referring to the metallic spikes he was sporting whereas strolling by way of the video.

It obtained to the purpose the place three followers have been tossed from the Memorial Event in June for shouting “Brooksy.” On the time, DeChambeau tried to play it off as finest he may and mentioned the chants weren’t impacting him and that the yells have been flattering.
He tried his finest to make it appear to be it wasn’t a hassle, however it did not cease the followers from doing it.
What in all probability made it even worse was that Koepka, who wasn’t enjoying in The Memorial, partnered with Michelob Extremely to offer free beer to any fan faraway from the event.
He began the video by saying, “What’s up guys, it is Brooksy,” then went on to thank the followers for displaying their assist by yelling his identify.

DeChambeau acknowledged that he noticed the video giving freely free beer and tried to show it right into a constructive.
“I am blissful that there is extra dialog about me, due to the PIP fund,” he mentioned on the time.
The PIP fund is the participant impression program that can cut up a $40 million pot between the ten golfers that obtain the highest-impact rating based mostly on social media presence and engagements. So, extra mentions equals an even bigger alternative for DeChambeau to get a few of that $40 million.
Because the feud continued to develop, extra yells of “Brooksy” occurred at occasions. Reporters began asking if it had gotten out of hand and if it was truly unhealthy for the sport.

“I feel it is good for the sport. I actually do,” Koepka mentioned. “The truth that golf’s on just about each information outlet for about two weeks fairly persistently, I feel that is a great factor. It is rising the sport.”
Rising the sport or not, it was changing into greater than it ever had been. With the Ryder Cup approaching and the thought of the 2 enjoying on a crew collectively, Steve Stricker went from an observer to a captain who wanted to make sure his gamers would not let it’s a distraction throughout the occasion.
“Yeah, it isn’t making my job any simpler, you understand,” Stricker mentioned in June. “I have not talked to both of them. I should in some unspecified time in the future. We’ll see the place it goes from there. Hopefully, they’ll put their variations apart for the week, be huge boys and are available collectively as a crew.”

I do not perceive, if to illustrate I do not play with Bryson or Bryson would not play with me, he takes care of his match, and I’d maintain my match, and I do not know the way that has any impact. What you do off the golf course would not have any impact on the golf course.”
No remorse right here
Every week later, on the U.S. Open on June 17, DeChambeau noticed a possibility as Koepka was as soon as once more being interviewed by Golf Channel. The interview was arrange greater than the walkway the place gamers have been going by.

— The Divot Room (@DivotRoom) June 18, 2021
Koepka did not discover it dwell and did not acknowledge whether or not he noticed it afterward, both.
However Koepka was requested concerning the genesis of the feud. He went again to the time DeChambeau approached Elliott and advised him if DeChambeau has one thing to say, that he ought to say it to his face.
“We each agreed we might depart one another out of it and would not point out one another, simply type of let it die off, would not point out one another’s names, simply go about it,” Koepka mentioned. “So, then he determined, I suppose he was occurring that little, no matter, enjoying video video games on-line or no matter, and introduced my identify up and mentioned a number of issues, so now it is honest sport.”
He was referencing the truth that DeChambeau took a shot at him on his livestream and made it as public as will be, moderately than protecting it in-house. Oddly sufficient, DeChambeau mentioned in July that he did not keep in mind what was mentioned within the dialog.
“We simply had a dialog that I actually do not know what occurred, as a result of we’ve not actually bantered backwards and forwards till now,” DeChambeau mentioned. “So, it is like, why is that this taking place now?”
On the time of the dialog, DeChambeau had praised Koepka for speaking and dealing issues out. He won’t keep in mind the context of the dialog, however beforehand acknowledging that it came about and what the dialog was about made it appear as if he was on the identical web page as Koepka on the time.
No matter whether or not he remembered the dialog, the feud had gone full-tilt and was as public because it has ever been.
Koepka digs in on social media
To start with of July, DeChambeau parted ways with caddie Tim Tucker earlier than the Rocket Mortgage Traditional in Detroit. Koepka took the chance to once more throw shade and tweeted out his assist for his personal caddie the identical day.
— Brooks Koepka (@BKoepka) July 1, 2021
DeChambeau was introspective in a media session, telling reporters that he by no means wished to be well-known rising up. He simply wished to be a golfer. He mentioned he is human, so naturally he’s impacted by issues which might be mentioned and conditions he has been in.
He acknowledged that he hasn’t approached sure conditions prior to now the easiest way and that he did not set out for this feud to develop into what it’s.
“I am any individual that does not essentially like controversy. I similar to doing my very own factor,” he mentioned. “Do I like showcasing one thing distinctive and totally different? Yeah, however I suppose what comes with that’s controversy, and I suppose that is one thing that I do not essentially deal the perfect with generally.”
That did not cease Koepka, although.
On Thursday at The Open, DeChambeau mentioned his driver sucked in an interview after having a poor efficiency off the tee. He blamed it on the construct of the membership itself and the physics in how firms create driver heads, as a substitute of his swing.
Koepka pounced on one other alternative.
Brooks Koepka: “I like my driver” 😂 That is content material, of us.
— Cam Rogers (@MrRogers99) July 16, 2021
It isn’t simply the actual fact the Koepka says it. It is the truth that he says it with a smile that reveals you the way a lot he is having fun with taking photographs, whether or not on tv or on social media.

At that time, the conflict had grow to be considerably one-sided within the public eye, with Koepka encouraging followers yelling his identify at tournaments, tweeting jabs and saying no matter he wished in interviews.
The captain steps in
Even supposing there hadn’t been a lot backwards and forwards for some time, the Ryder Cup grew to become an even bigger level of emphasis in August. Would the 2 be capable of be on the identical crew? Would they bicker the week of the Ryder Cup? Would it not harm the crew chemistry?
Stricker had a dialog with each gamers and got here away assured that the 2 would be capable of quash the meat for the week and that it would not be a distraction.
“They mentioned it isn’t going to be a difficulty, and I consider them,” Stricker mentioned. “I belief them. So far as I am involved, it has been put to mattress.”
Koepka acknowledged the dialog and mentioned he is keen to place it apart. DeChambeau has refused post-round interviews since earlier than the Olympics, so he hasn’t given his perspective on the feud and the Ryder Cup. However Stricker has mentioned each are on board.
All was effectively till three days later on the BMW Championship. After a 6-hole playoff, during which DeChambeau misplaced to Patrick Cantlay, a fan mentioned “Nice job, Brooksy,” as DeChambeau was strolling towards the clubhouse.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Van Valkenburg, who witnessed the incident, DeChambeau spun round and yelled, “You recognize what? Get the f— out,” on the fan.
Van Valkenburg mentioned DeChambeau had been coping with the taunts all week and weathered the storm till that second.
Whereas Koepka could have agreed to pause the feud, his followers had not.
That second induced the PGA Tour to get entangled, making a rule that can expel followers for yelling “Brooksy” at DeChambeau.
Now comes the precise Ryder Cup, with the 2 on the identical crew because the U.S. tries to bounce again from a rout three years in the past in Paris by the hands of the European crew. Will these two gamers on the identical crew harm the crew? Will followers at Whistling Straits be divided — not by U.S. vs. Europe however by Koepka vs. DeChambeau? Stricker believes he has the gamers on the identical web page.
It is time see if the rivalry takes a break or one other chapter of the feud is required.
The hugs to finish all of it?
All of us took Stricker for his phrase that the feud could be put apart, if for nothing greater than the truth that the gamers have a real love for this occasion and the result. Being rivals and desirous to win would supersede any petty riff between the 2.
After the win was official, Stricker was interviewed on digital camera concerning the crew and his focus was on how effectively this group got here collectively. That included Koepka and DeChambeau.
“They’d a mission this week, you possibly can inform it,” Stricker mentioned. “They performed nice, they usually got here collectively. I imply Brooks and Bryson wished to play collectively, that is how a lot it got here collectively. That reveals so much about this complete crew.”
— Tom VanHaaren (@TomVH) September 26, 2021

Whether or not this second is what ends this feud or not, the magnitude of the Ryder Cup and what it means to the gamers was in a position to carry two of the largest names in golf, who’ve been at one another’s throats for over two years, collectively for a number of temporary moments.
— Brooks Koepka (@BKoepka) September 26, 2021
We cannot see them making any dwell, chuckle, love indicators for one another, however two bro hugs is best than none, and it is a step towards doubtlessly mending a number of fences that have been damaged alongside the best way.
Made-for-TV drama, or the true factor?
It was all roses after the Ryder Cup, till DeChambeau and Koepka introduced the following version of The Match. The 2 will play towards one another in a 12-hole match at Wynn Golf Membership in Las Vegas on Friday.
The trash discuss had died down till this was introduced, and all of it ramped up once more.
— Brooks Koepka (@BKoepka) October 6, 2021
Whether or not that is only a well-executed publicity stunt in spite of everything the cuddling on the Ryder Cup, or if the truce is over, we do not know. We’ve seen the 2 go back-and-forth like outdated instances, although, and nobody has held again.
Koepka was at a boxing match and was requested which PGA Tour participant he’d need to combat within the ring. He responded, after a little bit of hesitation, by saying, “You already know that reply.”

All of this has been the lead-up to the televised match, and a number of it probably has to do with advertising and marketing. We cannot actually know whether or not the feud is again on or if the Ryder Cup healed all wounds. Till then, we are able to benefit from the barbs thrown backwards and forwards, and know we’ll at all times have Brady to assist poke the 2 bears.
